Clean Underwear

March 18, 2008

Around thirteen years ago I was in a rather serious motor cycle accident. I was sitting on a road awaiting to make a left turn into a convenience store to purchase some gum or something of the sort when I was struck from behind from a car moving at about fifty to sixty miles an hour. I flew through the air, bounced off the roof of the car and came crashing down on the ground behind the car totally in a daze. I laid in the oncoming traffic lane unable to get my body to move, I just remember looking out of my helmet at the car tire, and the asphalt. The next thing I knew someone was dragging me to the side of the road and telling me help was on the way and to quit trying to move. It seemed as only moments and I was hoisted onto a stretcher, rather roughly I might add and being carted into a screaming ambulance. Then this strange feeling came over my leg. I looked down the best I could, being they had my head secured at every possible point, and to my amazement the Paramedic was cutting all the way up my pants leg to get my pants off! My first thought, yep you guessed it ”what underwear do I have on!”. Thankfully, I had some nice boxers on, yes, even clean! My mothers words truly had saved me some added embarrassment after all. You see as a child anytime before we went on the shortest of trips, I was asked what shape where my underwear? I scoffed as a child, but on that day I was ever so thankful.

Tonight  I heard a sermon by a Dr. Bonnke on Exodus Twenty Eight.  So with all my funny stories aside, let me share with you what the Spirit of God is telling us.  We read in the Old Testament of grand robes, that the priest wore. Yet this was just a outer garment. God required more. God gave instruction for an undergarment. No one except God and the Priest would know of the shape of his undergarment, for the matter of fact, if he even wore any. Yet if he did not attend to the matter as God instructed he would be struck dead. So how does this translate into today’s time. Metaphorically speaking, our outer garment would be our works, church attendance, service, biblical knowledge etc. Our under garment, our spiritual underwear, as the Priest we have learned of, are only seen however by two people. Our Lord, and ourselves.  My question is this now, how many of us are walking around with dirty spiritual underwear? How many of us have placed all our strengths on looking good on the outside, yet our integrity, the undergarment of our spirit is one of filth and riddled with holes.

The dictionary defines integrity as: adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty; a sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition.

Joshua’s definition of integrity: What one does when not another sole is looking. Your moral character and the code by which you live and die by.

There must come a time in our lives, where we make the decision to throw away our garments of filth. Through temptation sin has ate, from the stitching of our sole as a vile plague all that which was good. We are not fit to be in the presence of a King. We are called by our Lord to repent, be baptized and sin no more. The Blood of Jesus was shed for the cleansing of our sins. Once clean, we are then justified through the Righteousness of Christ, to be in the presence of the King. I urge you with all sincerity, do not let the day come where you are caught in the presence of the Almighty God with undergarments that are fit for no more than the filth from which they represent.

Exodus Twenty Eight, verse Forty Two through Forty Three: “And thou shall make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness;from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach. And they shall be upon Aaron and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity and die:it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him”.

  1. Wow, what insight! I have never looked at my sprititual life that way. I am eager to make it better.

  2. Joshua, how interesting that you take this topic this week. Our Easter sermon is called Thread and it talks about our clothing. I plan on taking a slightly different angle.
    thanks for your insight!

  3. My thoughts where really opened when I listen to Dr. Bonnke’s insightful message on this chapter.
Pastor, now I can not wait to hear what you have to say!

  5. Great post. Thanks for the blog love.

  6. No matter how hard we try, at times we will fail. Romans says we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah). No matter how we present ourselves, we never quiet measure up to Jesus. The good news is, He has made provision to represent us, to cloth us. It’s not by our might, our power, or anything else we can do. Jesus knew that we would fail and He still made provision for us. So as Romans 13:14 says, “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ”.
